Y4 Project_2022-2023

This narrative examines London’s spatial fragmentation, wherein underutilized green parcels remain cordoned off by private boundaries. Through a filmic approach, the project foregrounds civic protests that contest existing ownership structures, highlighting the potential for these overlooked sites to be reimagined as vibrant community platforms that foster social engagement, cultural expression, and ecological restoration.

"There is perhaps no need of the poor of London which more prominently forces itself on the notice of anyone working among them than that of space. ... How can it best be given? And what is it precisely which should be given? I think we want four things. Places to sit in, places to play in, places to stroll in, and places to spend a day in."

-Octavia hill-

Through a filmic lens, the project documents how these scattered sites—often fenced off or neglected—highlight growing tensions between the public’s right to communal space and the rigidity of existing property boundaries. The narrative brings to the forefront civic protests and informal interventions, showcasing how communities strive to reclaim overlooked plots for collective benefit.

By weaving architectural analysis with first-person accounts, the film underscores both the social potential and ecological significance of these underused landscapes. It depicts spontaneous gatherings, creative appropriations, and grassroots organizing efforts, illuminating the broader cultural, political, and environmental implications of maintaining privatized green enclaves. In doing so, the film aims to question prevailing notions of ownership and accessibility, advocating for a city in which open, inclusive spaces are recognized as essential to urban resilience and communal well-being.
